"This is my 9th car since 1990. I have always been treated great here. I love the service department. I trust that any work that I have done is needed, and not jst to pad the bill." 7/19/11
The Legacy represents Subaru's entry in the crowded midsize sedan segment. One aspect that sets the Legacy apart from the majority of its competition is its full-time all-wheel drive that comes standard on every Subaru. The 2011 Legacy receives standard XM satellite radio and folding exterior mirrors on all models. The 2.5GT Limited gains fog lights, aluminum pedals and a power moonroof as standard equipment. The base 2011 Subaru Legacy remains offered with a starting price of less than $20,000. In engineering terms, the Subaru Legacy comes out clearly ahead of its competition. The Legacy 2.5i, redesigned in 2010 to begin the fifth successful generation, has plenty of power, tons of room, with luxury and comfort exceeding its class, while getting a combined 27 mpg with the CVT transmission, and an be bought at a very affordable price. The Legacy 2.5GT is an all-out sports sedan, and the Legacy 3.6R is a midsize luxury car. Each model has class-leading virtues.
'11 Legacy Power and Drive
The Legacy is available with a 170-hp naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed manual (or optional six-speed CVT), or a 265-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed manual, or a new for this year, 3.6-liter six-cylinder with a five-speed automatic. The CVT and automatic transmissions feature a manual mode with paddle levers on the steering wheel. The GT has higher output across the board, but it requires premium gasoline. The 3.6-liter also runs on regular, replacing a 3.0-liter that required premium. A six-speed manual is standard, and the 2.5i can have a new continuously variable automatic transmission that's expected to improve efficiency over the 2009; it includes a manual mode and shift paddles on the steering wheel. The 3.6R comes only with a five-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is standard, but the sophistication increases as you make the jump from the manual to the CVT to the 3.6-liter's five-speed.
Design of the 2011 Subaru Legacy
The Legacy's grille has the familiar wing-shaped crossbar and constellation symbol known to Subaru. As in the previous generation, 2.5GT versions have a hood scoop to funnel cooling air into the turbocharged four-cylinder engine's intercooler. A new rigid chassis contributes to the silence of the interior. It's a full reinforced cage of high-strength steel, heavier, although the new Legacy is still only 49 pounds heavier than before, thanks to weight-saving in other areas. There are also newly revised fluid engine mounts, which add to the exceptional smoothness for a four-cylinder car. In front, the Subaru badge of stars is ringed by a chrome grille whose lower edge is squared off. Character lines arc from the grille and form power bulges on the hood and taper upward to the A-pillar. The profile is sleek, and the roofline is coupe-like, even with an increased greenhouse. The wider chassis spreads the front track by 2.7 inches and rear track by 3.3 inches, giving the Legacy a noticeably wider stance.
2011 Subaru Legacy Cabin
The 2011 Legacy is very quiet inside (especially the six-cylinder), thanks to a number of things, such as framed door glass and double sealing of all four doors. The rear doors are 15 inches wider (with double beams providing more strength against impact), for easier entry and exit. The interior materials are higher quality all around. The center console offers more space thanks to a new standard electric parking brake, which includes the Hill Holder system that now lasts until the car accelerates, not just a couple seconds. The four-gauge instrument panel is clean and stylish, with a multi-information display standard. The controls on the center stack are all well done. The electronically controlled HVAC system is all new, with powerful and quiet air conditioning and optional dual zone control. The ambient lighting for the console is pleasant. Visibility in all directions is good. With improvements from 2010, there is more head room, leg room, hip room, shoulder room, front and rear. the one exception is less front leg room, which is a practical place to borrow some leg room for the rear, because there's still 43 inches in front, and now 37.8 inches in rear, an increase of 3.9 inches over the pre-2010 Legacy. Overall, there is an increase in passenger volume to 103 cubic feet (from 93.5 in the previous car). The front bucket seats are very comfortable. The rear seats, especially in perforated leather, fit as nicely as the fronts, with a new scalloped seatback that gives more knee room.
