The compact SUV segment is full of great contenders but two clearly stand out among the rest: the 2018 Subaru Forester and the 2018 Toyota RAV4. The Forester offers great fuel economy, a roomy cabin with superior outward visibility, and high ground clearance! As well as an optional turbocharged engine and standard all-wheel drive! The Toyota RAV4 didn't see an upgrade but it does stay relevant with a large interior with ample cargo room and tons of standard safety features! Check out the rest of our comparison review to find out which compact SUV is the best of the best!

2018 Subaru Forester Power & Handling

There are two powertrain options for the 2018 Forester both of which feature Subaru's signature flat "boxer" style engines. This engine setup is set lower into the vehicle creating enhanced stability and a lower center of gravity. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter boxer-4 engine that delivers 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque paired with the standard six-speed manual transmission or the optional Lineartronic CVT automatic. When it comes to fuel economy this engine paired with the automatic transmission can get 32 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg with the manual! A 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-4 engine is optional for 2018 Forester models. This engine creates 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine gets 27 mpg on the highway.

2018 Toyota RAV4 Power & Handling

There is just one powertrain option for the 2018 RAV4. Powering all the models is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque and matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. All RAV4 models come standard with FWD but you can opt for AWD on all models. When it comes to fuel economy the RAV4 is pretty decent. With FWD this engine gets 29 mpg on the highway and with AWD 28 mpg.

Both of these vehicles are incredible, built with versatility in mind, and offer superior features but the 2018 Subaru Forester is the clear winner!
