2019 Subaru Crosstrek vs 2019 Mazda CX-5 near Philadelphia, PA

Looking at the SUV lineup of 2019 models it can be difficult to find the right match for you. Well, today we wanted to help trim down the selection by bringing the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek and Mazda CX-5 to the front lines as two of the best-ranked models on the market. In this review we will break down each vehicle and look at the important details that stick out to help decide which of the two we would suggest as the overall strongest pick; continue reading to find out what we think in this matchup!

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Power & Handling

The 2019 Crosstrek speaks as an upstanding example of how a powertrain can really fuel a crossover SUV's versatility packing a choice between two different engine types. The first engine that comes standard with the Crosstrek is the 2.0-liter flat-4 engine that clocks at 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. At lower trim levels you get a standard 6-speed manual transmission giving you more control over the shifting or the choice of an optional continuously variable transmission both coming in on 4x4 all-wheel drive. If you are looking for some improved fuel-economy the second powertrain has got you covered with a 2.0-liter flat-4 engine that works in conjunction with an 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery dishing out 137 horsepower and 134 pound-feet of torque. This hybrid engine keeps you on the road longer with less refuels clocking an impressive 35 mpg fuel economy.

2019 Mazda CX-5 Power & Handling

In the CX-5 you will come across a couple of engine options that are sufficient for the vehicle to handle. The first engine is the 2.5-liter inline-4 which brings a decent power and handling with a six-speed automatic transmission. This first engine is decent but does not come standard with all-wheel drive that the Crosstrek supplies from the get-go. The CX-5 does have an option for an improved engine though with the 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine. This engine does have a slightly enhanced powertrain, but lacks the core fuel efficiency we see from the Crosstrek's hybrid engine; this paired with a smaller fuel tank capacity means that you will be on the road less and spending a lot more over-time on fuel economy.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Features & Design

The offers a strong core set of standard features supplying comfort and luxury throughout each of their trim levels to ensure you have the best experience while on the drive. Starting at the base 2.0i trim level you will see such great features as 17-inch wheels, a rearview camera, automatic windows, 60/40-split-folding rear seatbacks with a full-fledged infotainment system composed of a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, USB port, Bluetooth and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Moving down the trim line further enhances the driving experience with upgraded leather upholstery and overall interior trim design, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, sunroof, keyless entry and ignition and more! We were very impressed with overall how the trim levels progressed in luxury and convenience as well as the optional packages offered to help taper your SUV to fit your needs.

2019 Mazda CX-5 Features & Design

For the Mazda CX-5, there is a multitude of trim levels that add features but also dilute out some features we would expect to be standard at a base level. At the base Sport trim level, Mazda brings 17-inch wheels, split reclining rear seats, four-speaker sound system with a touchscreen display that has USB ports and Bluetooth accessibility. This is a pretty decent line-up, however, the infotainment system Mazda supplies at the base trim level does not include smartphone integration missing out on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which we would have expected to be standard in a modern-day SUV. Further down the trim line certain features missing in the base level, that we see already included with Subaru's Crosstrek, are brought in requiring you to pay more to have access. We were pleased to see that at higher trim levels there is a good line-up of luxury based features that match with what the Crosstrek also offers such as ventilated seats, adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control, etc.

All in all, these are two highly-rated SUVs and after digging into the features and powertrains of each vehicle there is no surprise why. For this 2019 matchup, we have to give the win to the Subaru Crosstrek over the Mazda CX-5. The CX-5 has a nice lineup of features and powertrains but falls short on the impressive fuel economy and features offered at all trim levels in the Crosstrek. Subaru really does an excellent job incorporating a steady progression of design features while having the base trim level packed with modern technological comforts.
