2017 Subaru Outback vs 2016 Honda CR-V near Philadelphia, PA

The 2017 Subaru Outback and 2016 Honda CR-V are two of the finest wagon/crossover SUVs on the market, offering plenty of interior comforts, cargo space, and dynamic drive systems. The Outback has arrived to 2017 with a great Touring trim that has special exterior and interior trim features. Coming standard are alloy wheels, and the optional EyeSight Driver Assistance technology suite has gained automated high beam headlight control and reverse automatic braking. The 2016 Honda CR-V will feature a new Special Edition trim which shares many similarities with the base LX trim, but gains a security system, rear privacy glass, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Learn more about how these vehicles compete by reading below!

2017 Subaru Outback Power & Handling

The Outback is well known for its dynamic powertrain, and for 2017 it comes standard with Subaru's innovative all-wheel drive system and 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine. This configuration is paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and it offers ratings of 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, Subaru offers a 3.6-liter BOXER six-cylinder engine with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The six-cylinder engine also features a CVT and all-wheel drive system. To aid in its all-weather capabilities, the Outback has 8.7-inches of ground clearance.

2016 Honda CR-V Power & Handling

There are limited options with the CR-V's powertrain, and Honda only offers a CVT and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. This will provide 185 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. The only real customization options offered with the CR-V is the ability to choose between front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

2017 Subaru Outback Features & Design

Subaru offers their 2017 Outback with six optional trim levels, and the base is called the 2.5i. This great trim will have a wide range of standard exterior and interior features, leading to a comfortable and convenient experience. The base 2.5i model has roof rails with integrated cross bars, in addition to a rearview camera and a Starlink 6.2-inch touchscreen interface. There are many ways to connect to the infotainment system through smartphone integration apps, and the great four-speaker sound system has access to an auxiliary audio jack, CD player, and more. Safety features include active front head restraints, antilock brakes, and Starlink Connected Services with automatic collision notification and emergency assistance.

2016 Honda CR-V Features & Design

The CR-V is a five-passenger SUV, and it is available in five different trim levels. The base model is called the LX, and it is equipped with 16-inch steel wheels, cruise control, and full power accessories. The CR-V also has a rearview camera, a conversation mirror, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The base model has a four-speaker sound system, along with a USB port and auxiliary audio jack, but it does not come with a standard infotainment system. For safety, the CR-V has front seat side airbags, stability/traction control, and antilock brakes.

Deciding which of these two vehicles is right for you and your family can be difficult, especially when taking into consideration your typical driving environments and your daily needs. The 2017 Subaru Outback offers a better overall value, and a proven drive system that can handle a wide range of terrains. The CR-V will offer a respectable performance, but it lacks the standard all-wheel drive system found in the base Outback, and the Honda model has fewer standard features.
